I’ve been working with a dealer on a tractor for maintaining a 0.5 mile road at 9000 feet. I need to grade the road and do snow removal. Do I need a turbo at that altitude? I’ve looked at a 970, 4210 and a 4410. The dealer is saying that I should consider a 5320 because it is a turbo. Is this reasonable, or is he just trying to sell me more than I need? The tractor will come with a loader and a medium duty rear blade for grading. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Reread the post and noticed my dyslexia transposed the numbers. The 970 should have been a 790 and the 5320 a 3520. Sorry about the transposition. ....

No. Your dealer is not pulling your leg.

I will find my density altitude calculator tomorrow and give you the hard numbers, but for now I will hazard an educated guess and say that depending on the temperature, a normally aspirated engine will only produce about 60 percent of its rated power at that altitude.

If I were investing in a turbo, I would investigate an external oil pump.

DRankin is right. I forget what the rule of thumb is that we used for snowmobiles. But 60% of rated power is in the ball-park. You may have to go bigger engines or a turbo system. 9000 feet is pretty high up.

Isn't that somewhere near Eagle and Vail? Back a few years ago I have a brand new '95 S-10 Blazer driving through on I-70. I had it floored and couldn't get it above 45 mph.

I agree you should go with the 3520!

P.S. I always like staying at the Tivoli Lodge in Vail Village. ....
